Item Description

Sailors' legends tell of the Ourang Medan, a ship said to have been found drifting in the late 1940s with its entire crew dead, faces frozen in terror and no explanation. Supermassive Games, the studio behind Until Dawn, took that legend and built the first chapter of The Dark Pictures Anthology around it: a diving trip in the South Pacific that goes horribly, unpredictably wrong.

Five young people head out in search of a sunken World War II wreck: brothers Alex and Brad, Alex's girlfriend Julia, her brother Conrad, played by Shawn Ashmore, and their boat captain Fliss. A run-in with pirates leads them to a rusting ghost ship, and from there the night becomes a claustrophobic nightmare in which every character can survive and every character can die. Choices ripple forward in ways you will not see coming, quick-time events punish hesitation, and heartbeat-timing prompts test whether a character can keep calm when something moves in the dark.

Hidden pictures scattered around the ship offer brief premonitions of possible futures, warnings you can heed or ignore, and between chapters the Curator, the anthology's dry, knowing host played by Pip Torrens, comments on your choices and occasionally offers a hint. Man of Medan was also designed for company. Movie Night lets up to five players pass a single controller, each taking charge of a character, and an online Shared Story mode was built so two players could experience the voyage from different perspectives at the same time.

A playthrough runs about the length of a horror double feature, which makes it ideal for a single unsettling evening, and the branching paths reward a second and third trip back aboard. As the opening chapter of an anthology that went on to include Little Hope, House of Ashes and The Devil in Me, it is where Supermassive's run of standalone horror stories began, and a great pick for a group that wants to argue over every decision together.
