Most RPG heroes save a village. In Dark Cloud, Toan has to rebuild his from the ground up, house by house and river by river. When the scheming Colonel Flag Gilgister revives the Dark Genie, the monster wipes Norune Village and the lands beyond it off the map, sealing their people, homes and landscapes inside magical orbs called Atla and scattering them through the dungeons below.
That sets up the Georama system, the idea that made Dark Cloud unforgettable. Every Atla you dig out of a dungeon floor holds a piece of the world: a house, a tree, a stream, a villager. Back on the surface you place them however you like, and residents have their own wishes about where they want to live and what should stand nearby, so fulfilling their requests earns rewards and moves the story along. Watching an empty patch of ground turn back into Norune Village, then Matataki Village and the towns beyond, is deeply satisfying, and being able to walk through your creation in first person was a striking showcase for the new hardware.
Underground, the dungeons are randomly laid-out floors of monsters, keys and treasure, fought in real time. Weapons wear down and break if you neglect them, but they also grow: level them through battle, fuse in gems and attachments, and they can build up into entirely new weapons, turning every blade into a long-term project. A thirst meter keeps you watching your water, and a growing party adds new tools, including Xiao the cat girl with her slingshot, the hammer-swinging Goro, the genie Ruby, the warrior Ungaga and the gun-toting Osmond, each with skills that matter in the depths.
Dark Cloud was the debut game from Level-5, the studio that went on to make Dark Chronicle, Dragon Quest VIII and Professor Layton, and you can see its love of layered systems taking shape here. Arriving early in the PS2's life, it gave the young console an ambitious RPG when the library was thin, and its blend of crafting, building and crawling has aged into a cult favorite. Playing it on original hardware is the best way to meet the ideas that Dark Chronicle would later polish.
One of the PS2's first RPGs, Dark Cloud is a title that challenges players to not only strategise, battle and solve puzzles, but also to create geographical landscapes using the new Georama system. Gamers assume the role of a young boy named Toran on an unforgettable journey of rebirth, revival and hope. Unfortunately an evil demon spirit has been released and has left destruction in its wake and Toran must harness the spirit of those destroyed to rebuild the lands in time for an epic confrontation. True to life graphics should mesmerise gamers as they create villages complete with houses, hills, churches, volcanoes, and streams; they'll even be able to control the weather!
