Item Description

The game that inspired Gauntlet came first, and Dark Chambers is its return. In 1983 John Palevich created Dandy, a dungeon crawl for Atari's 8-bit computers released through the Atari Program Exchange, and Ed Logg's arcade smash Gauntlet followed two years later with a strikingly similar idea. Atari later revived Palevich's design as Dark Chambers for the 2600, 7800 and XE, and the 7800 cartridge gives that history a playable home on the console.

The formula is fast and immediate. You work your way down through dungeon after dungeon, throwing daggers at a steady stream of monsters while shooting their generators to stop the flood at its source. Keys open locked doors, treasure piles up your score and food restores your health, while bombs clear the screen when the horde closes in. Every level ends at an exit leading deeper down, and the crowds only get thicker the farther you descend, so pacing your food and bombs becomes its own strategy.

Two players can fight side by side at once, and that is where Dark Chambers comes alive. One player can hold off the generators while the other runs for keys and treasure, and the inevitable arguments over who gets the food are exactly what keeps a co-op session loud.

Gauntlet itself never made it to the 7800, so this is the system's answer to that whole style of game, and with Dandy behind it, arguably the original. It is quick to pick up, tense in long runs and a great reason to keep a second joystick plugged into the 7800.
