Item Description

Dante's Inferno wastes no time establishing its tone: within minutes of the opening, the hero fights Death himself, defeats him and takes his scythe. That stolen weapon carries Dante, here reimagined as a Templar knight returning from the Crusades, through all nine circles of Hell in pursuit of Lucifer, who has claimed the soul of his fiancée Beatrice. Visceral Games, the studio behind Dead Space, adapted the first part of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy into a brutal, grotesque and strikingly designed action game.

Each circle has its own landscape and its own monsters. You ride Charon's ferry across the Acheron, wade through Lust's writhing towers, face the bloated horror of Gluttony and fight through the boiling rivers of Violence, with towering boss encounters along the way, including King Minos, Cerberus and Cleopatra. The descent into Fraud turns the Malebolge into a series of challenge arenas, and the poem's sins are rendered with a gruesome imagination that pushes classical illustrations of the Inferno somewhere far more unsettling.

Combat runs at 60 frames per second and pairs Death's scythe for close-quarters combos with Beatrice's holy cross for ranged attacks. The damned souls you meet can be absolved or punished, and those choices feed two separate upgrade paths, Holy and Unholy, so your Dante can lean toward redemption or damnation. Mana-fueled spells and relics add further options, and Virgil appears as a guide on the long way down.

Comparisons to God of War were inevitable and reviews were mixed to positive, but critics agreed on the striking art direction, and Garry Schyman's choral, orchestral score gives the descent real grandeur. EA even released an animated film alongside the game. It is a lavish, blood-soaked adaptation of a literary classic, a heavy-metal rendition of a 700-year-old poem that is still fun to tear through.

About the game

Dante's Inferno is an epic single player, third-person action adventure game inspired by "Inferno", part one of Dante Alighieri's classic Italian poem, "The Divine Comedy." Featuring nonstop action rendered at 60 frames-per-second, signature and upgradable weapons, attack combos and mana-fueled spells and the choice of punishing or absolving the souls of defeated enemies, it is a classic Medieval tale of the eternal conflict with sin and the resulting horrors of hell, adapted for a new generation and a new medium.
