Earn an AA on a Heavy chart in your final stage and the game hands you MAXX UNLIMITED at one and a half times speed, with the arrows scrolling in reverse, the step zone hidden and a life gauge that never recovers. Survive that with another AA and KAKUMEI waits as the One More Extra Stage, a sudden-death showdown at triple speed. DDRMAX2 brought that arcade-style Extra Stage gauntlet into North American living rooms, and it gave a generation of PlayStation 2 players a reason to practice until their shirts were soaked.

Konami's 2003 North American release packs 69 songs and pairs the series' own heavy hitters with a licensed list built for the dance floor. AFRONOVA, HYSTERIA, xenon and the clean mix of PARANOiA KCET carry the Konami side, along with the brooding "Silent Hill", a nod to the company's horror series. The licensed picks run from KC and the Sunshine Band's "Get Down Tonight" and Kylie Minogue's "Love at First Sight" to The Crystal Method's "Busy Child", Dirty Vegas' "Days Go By" and Ian Van Dahl's "Will I?". Licensed songs play over their official music videos where available, which gives the disc a distinctly early-2000s music-television flavor.

MAX2 also widened the doors at both ends. Beginner difficulty eases first-timers onto the pad, while Challenge charts, new to a North American release, give veterans something nastier than Heavy. The Groove Radar sizes up every chart for stream, voltage, air, freeze and chaos, so you know exactly what kind of punishment is coming, and freeze arrows ask you to hold a step rather than tap it. Nonstop Mode strings songs into themed courses and lets you build your own orders, an Exercise Mode keeps tabs on your workout, Edit Mode lets you write custom steps, and links to earlier DDR games unlock extra features.

This is PlayStation 2-era DDR at full speed: dance pads in living rooms, cabinets drawing crowds at the mall, and a home version finally ambitious enough to keep up with the arcade. MAX2 is the North American mix where the console games first started to feel like the real machine, and the natural starting point for a serious PS2 dance shelf.
