Item Description

Mahjong solitaire usually asks you to find pairs. Daitoride asks you to build hands. That single twist is what makes this Japanese Saturn release such an interesting puzzle game, and why it rewards players who know their way around a set of mahjong tiles.

Daitoride is the third game in Metro Corporation's Toride series, which first appeared in Japanese arcades. Instead of clearing tiles two at a time, you form proper mahjong melds, three-tile sets made either of matching tiles or of numbered sequences, and the familiar pair-matching shortcut is gone. To balance the extra demands, your hand holds eight tiles rather than seven, which gives you room to plan but never quite enough to relax. Every move becomes a small calculation about what to keep, what to commit and which set you are quietly building toward.

The arcade version hit Japanese game centers in January 1996, and Metro brought it to the Saturn that June. It never received a Western release, which keeps it firmly in import territory and makes it a fun discovery for collectors who enjoy the Saturn's deep catalog of Japan-only puzzle games.

If you have played Shanghai and wanted something with a little more strategy, or you already enjoy mahjong and want a solitaire format that uses its real hand-building logic, Daitoride is a clever, compact way to scratch that itch on original hardware.
