Night City is the real star of Cyberpunk 2077: a vertical sprawl of megabuildings, neon markets, gang-run suburbs and sun-baked badlands where everyone is selling something, usually themselves. CD Projekt Red, the studio behind The Witcher 3, built its open-world RPG on Mike Pondsmith's tabletop Cyberpunk universe, and the city it made is dense, loud and endlessly watchable.
You play V, a mercenary whose story begins with one of three lifepaths, Nomad, Streetkid or Corpo, each with its own opening and dialogue options that surface throughout the game. A heist alongside V's best friend Jackie Welles goes badly wrong, and V ends up carrying the Relic, an experimental biochip housing the digital ghost of Johnny Silverhand, a rockerboy terrorist played by Keanu Reeves. Johnny lives in V's head, where he argues, mocks and occasionally helps, and their uneasy partnership drives a story with several very different endings.
How you survive Night City is up to you. Cyberware rewires V's body with options like arm-mounted mantis blades and time-slowing Sandevistan implants, netrunners can turn cameras, turrets and enemy implants against their owners with quickhacks, and stealth, guns, katanas and bare fists are all valid paths through a job. Side gigs hold some of the game's sharpest writing, and braindance recordings let you replay and investigate other people's memories. The soundtrack is a world unto itself, from the score by Marcin Przybyłowicz, P.T. Adamczyk and Paul Leonard-Morgan to radio stations packed with original music and the Samurai songs performed by Refused.
The game's 2020 launch was famously rocky, especially on last-generation consoles like the PS4, and CD Projekt spent the following years patching and improving it. The ambition at its core never wavered, though. The PS4 release is the original edition of a game whose comeback became part of its legend, and the version that first introduced players to V, Johnny and the city that tries to swallow them both.
