Item Description

Square's late-1990s PlayStation catalog is full of experiments that never left Japan, and Cyber Org is one of the most intriguing. Developed by FuzzBox and released in Japan in April 1999, it is a space-opera action adventure in which you switch among three members of the Space Investigation Squad, a team sent to learn the fate of a diplomatic vessel that has vanished.

The game moves you through a series of futuristic areas, each with its own puzzles and fights staged in polygonal 3D. It was designed to be easy to pick up, with controls built around one main action button plus a secondary button for combo attacks, so the focus stays on exploring, swapping between squad members and piecing the mystery together. Hyoji Shinohara directed, Shinji Hashimoto produced and Michie Narita wrote the story.

The music is where Cyber Org has made its most lasting mark. Composer Yoshihiro Sato's score was released as a two-disc original soundtrack, complete with a nearly ten-minute bonus piece titled "Symphony No. 1," and it earned strong marks from game-music reviewers. That reputation has kept the game on the radar of Square soundtrack collectors who might otherwise never have heard of it.

In a Square import library, Cyber Org fills a gap many Western collectors do not know exists: a lesser-known PlayStation project from the same prolific stretch that produced Brave Fencer Musashi and Ehrgeiz. As a Japan-only release with Japanese text, it is most rewarding as a curiosity and a collector's piece for players who enjoy the corners of Square's history the West never saw.
