Item Description

Croc's story starts with a basket drifting downriver. Inside is a baby crocodile, and the furry little Gobbos who find him raise him as one of their own, so when the villainous Baron Dante descends on their islands and captures the Gobbos, it is Croc, now grown and wearing his trusty backpack, who sets off to bring them home. It is a sweet, storybook premise, and Argonaut Games built one of the earliest fully 3D platformers on the PlayStation around it.

The adventure spreads across themed islands, from lush forest to snowfields, scorching desert and a looming castle, each packed with levels to clear. Croc stomps and swings his tail at enemies, hops across floating platforms and searches every stage for captured Gobbos and colored crystals that open up hidden areas, with bosses waiting to test him along the way. Levels mix outdoor exploration with caves, ice slides and gauntlets of moving platforms, and finding every Gobbo takes a sharp eye.

The game has an interesting origin story of its own. Argonaut, the British studio that worked with Nintendo on Star Fox and the Super FX chip, had prototyped a 3D platformer starring Yoshi, and when that project did not go ahead the team reshaped the idea around a brand new hero. Croc arrived in 1997, published by Fox Interactive, sold well enough to join the PlayStation's Greatest Hits line, and earned a sequel in 1999.

Today it is a charming snapshot of the moment platformers first learned to move in three dimensions, experimental controls and camera included. Its bright worlds and cheerful hero make it an easy recommendation for younger players and late-1990s nostalgics alike, and the Yoshi connection gives it a fun bit of history on a shelf of early PlayStation mascot contenders.
