Before Cloud Strife ever stepped off that train in Midgar, there was Zack Fair. Crisis Core tells the story of the cheerful, restless SOLDIER whose mentor Angeal called him a puppy, who fought alongside Sephiroth and met a flower girl in a Sector 5 church, and anyone who knows Final Fantasy VII knows where his story has to go. Knowing does not soften it. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, released by Square Enix in 2022 with development support from Tose, rebuilds the 2007 PSP original for modern consoles.

The plot follows Zack through the defection of Genesis, a rogue SOLDIER First Class with a habit of quoting the epic poem LOVELESS, through the secrets of Shinra's experiments and on to the events at Nibelheim that set the stage for everything to come. Familiar faces fill it out, from Aerith and the Turks to a young Cloud and a Sephiroth not yet consumed by what he learns about himself.

Reunion is far more than a resolution bump. Every character and environment was remastered in HD with a look much closer to Final Fantasy VII Remake, the story is now fully voiced, and the soundtrack, originally composed by Takeharu Ishimoto, returns in new arrangements. The real-time combat feels faster and more fluid than on PSP, while the Digital Mind Wave, the slot-machine reel that spins during battle to trigger Limit Breaks, summons and level-ups, keeps its unpredictable charm. Materia Fusion still lets you combine materia into stronger abilities, and the long list of optional side missions, reached from save points, is back for completionists.

With Zack's role growing in the Remake era, this is the perfect place to meet him properly. Playing Crisis Core gives the opening of Final Fantasy VII, and especially the final minutes of this game, an entirely different weight, and Reunion is the best-looking, best-sounding way to see Zack's story through to its last stand.
