Item Description

Long before Cloud Strife woke up in Midgar believing he had been a SOLDIER, there was Zack Fair: cheerful, restless, endlessly loyal, and fated for one of the most heartbreaking last stands in Final Fantasy. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII tells his story, and in doing so it reframes everything players thought they knew about the opening hours of Final Fantasy VII. This is the original Japanese release from September 2007, the version where the story first reached players.

Zack's journey runs from his days as an eager Second Class SOLDIER under his mentor Angeal, through the defection of the brooding Genesis, to the Nibelheim incident and a young Sephiroth's fall. Along the way he meets Aerith in the Sector 5 church and forms the friendship with Cloud that shapes the original game. Combat is real-time, and the Digital Mind Wave, a slot-machine reel that spins constantly in the corner of the screen, lines up character portraits and numbers to trigger Limit Breaks, summons, Materia boosts and even level ups. It sounds chaotic, but it keeps every fight unpredictable, and the reel is tied to Zack's memories of the people he cares about. Materia fusion lets you combine and strengthen your setup, and hundreds of optional missions offer a deep well of side content.

For import collectors, the Japanese voice cast is a major attraction. Kenichi Suzumura plays Zack, and Genesis is voiced by the singer Gackt, whose likeness also inspired the character's design. Takeharu Ishimoto's score mixes rock with fresh arrangements of Nobuo Uematsu's themes, and the theme song, Why, is performed by Ayaka. Note that the hard difficulty mode was added for the later Western releases, so this original version reflects the game as Square Enix first shipped it.

Crisis Core sold over two million copies worldwide and became a signature game for the PSP, and its ending is etched into the memory of a generation of Final Fantasy players. This Japanese edition captures that moment at its source, in the language and with the performances that first brought Zack's story to life.
