Item Description

The sound of an agility orb is pure Crackdown: a soft green glow on a rooftop just out of reach, pulling you higher, and then the moment you grab enough of them and your next jump carries you clean across a street. Realtime Worlds' 2007 open-world action game for the Xbox 360 is built around that feeling of growing stronger, and few sandbox games have made raw progression feel so physical.

You are an Agent of the Agency, a genetically enhanced supercop dropped into Pacific City to dismantle three criminal organizations: the street gang Los Muertos, the Russian mob known as the Volk and the corrupt Shai-Gen Corporation. There is no rigid mission order. Each gang has a kingpin protected by a roster of generals, and every general you take out weakens the boss, so you can pick your targets, scout their hideouts and decide how you want to hit them.

Every action feeds a skill. Agility grows as you leap and climb, Strength with hand-to-hand takedowns, Firearms and Explosives with your weapons of choice, and Driving with vehicular mayhem, and your Agency vehicles visibly transform as your driving improves. By the end you are vaulting skyscrapers, hurling cars and hunting down the city's 500 agility orbs and 300 hidden orbs for the pure joy of it, with rooftop races and stunt challenges scattered around the map. It was designed for two-player co-op over Xbox Live, letting a friend share the whole city.

Crackdown came from Realtime Worlds, the studio founded by David Jones, co-creator of Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto. Early copies famously came marked with access to the Halo 3 multiplayer beta, but it was Crackdown itself that kept people playing, earning strong reviews and awards for its innovation and launching a series that continued with two sequels. It is the original and still the purest version of its superpowered sandbox, a city that turns every building into a climbing challenge.

About the game

Crackdown is an open world, third-person shooter video game for the Xbox 360. Set in the fictional Pacific City, the player controls a biologically enhanced Agent, tasked with defeating three crime lords and their organized crime syndicates. The Agent's abilities improve by defeating both crime lords and their supporters, as well as by completing optional activities, such as street races and scavenger hunts. The gameplay is nonlinear: instead of following a rigid mission sequence, players are free to select the approach to completing their missions and activities. The game features a two-player cooperative play mode via Xbox Live. Crackdown, initially planned for release on the original Xbox console, was envisioned as a vast world in which players could experiment and explore freely. Microsoft Game Studios bundled specifically marked copies of Crackdown with an access code to the multiplayer test version of the much-anticipated Halo 3 Beta. The game sold 1.5 million copies in its first six months of release because everybody wanted to play Halo 3. It received positive reviews and has garnered several awards for its innovative gameplay.
