Item Description
White borders, a plain text box and two blue mana symbols: Fifth Edition's Counterspell looks exactly like the Magic many players first learned on. Released in early 1997, Fifth Edition was the core set that sat in starter displays and kitchen-table piles throughout the late '90s, and Counterspell was the card every blue player wanted to draw.
Its rules have never changed, because they have never needed to. Two blue mana, counter target spell, full stop. There is no restriction on what it can hit, which is exactly why it has defined blue's identity as the color of control since the game began. It still does that job beautifully in Commander, cube and any casual deck that wants to tell an opponent no at the perfect moment.
This is the Fifth Edition printing, collector number 77, a white-bordered non-foil common illustrated by Hannibal King. For collectors filling out a run of the 1997 core set, or for players who love the old-school look of a white-bordered card in a modern deck, it is a charming way to own the original hard counter.
