Item Description

Namco has a soft spot for adorable invaders, and the Cosmo Gangers are some of its cutest. These little aliens started life in Cosmo Gang, a Namco redemption game, before getting a full shooter of their own in the 1991 arcade release Cosmo Gang the Video. The Super Famicom version followed in Japan in 1992, bringing the Gangers' mischief home for one or two players.

If you have played Galaxian, you will feel at home within seconds. You pilot a ship along the bottom of the screen while the Cosmo Gangers swoop in from the left and right, fire volleys of bullets and settle into formation, then break away in ones and twos to dive-bomb your position. Shoot certain enemies and they leave power-ups behind, and unlike some of its relatives, there is no capture-and-rescue trick here: you simply keep your ship alive. A second player can join simultaneously, the yellow and white ships covering the screen together.

The Challenging Stages are the clever twist. Instead of shooting for points, you have 24 seconds to stop the Gangers from making off with your energy containers, a nod to the redemption game where the characters first appeared. It changes the pace completely and adds a frantic, almost slapstick tension to a formula that otherwise rewards calm aim.

Cosmo Gang the Video is a lesser-known corner of Namco's shooter family tree, sitting between the Galaxian-era classics and the company's later 16-bit work, and its bright, cartoonish style makes it one of the friendliest shooters on the Super Famicom. Two-player co-op is the best reason to plug it in today.
