Item Description
Behind a small, wallpapered-over door in the Pink Palace apartments waits a world where everything is better, until you notice the buttons. Coraline on the PlayStation 2 lets you explore both sides of that door as the curious heroine of Henry Selick's stop-motion film, adapted from Neil Gaiman's novella and the first feature from the animation studio Laika.
Published by D3Publisher and developed by Papaya Studio, the game arrived alongside the film in early 2009 and brought three of its voices with it: Dakota Fanning as Coraline, Keith David as the Cat and Robert Bailey Jr. as Wybie. You move between the ordinary house and its too-perfect copy, meeting the film's oddball neighbors, the mouse-circus trainer Mr. Bobinsky and the retired actresses Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, while the Other Mother tightens her web. Progress comes through a string of mini-games and small tasks, from matching and rhythm challenges to a slingshot game, hunting for objects around the house and pushing boxes to reach new spots, with buttons earned as currency along the way.
It is a short, light adventure, a few evenings of play rather than a long quest, and critics were tough on its mini-game structure. Its charm is the license: a rare chance to step inside Coraline's world interactively with the film's own voice cast, from the period when the PS2 was still getting new movie tie-ins deep into its final years. Younger fans of the film will enjoy wandering the house and the Other World, and it makes a natural companion piece for anyone collecting Laika and Gaiman memorabilia.
