Item Description

Few games shaped a genre as directly as Command & Conquer. Building on its own Dune II, Westwood Studios' 1995 real-time strategy landmark locked in the formula a generation of RTS games would follow: harvest a resource, build a base, raise an army and outthink an opponent doing the same thing at the same time. This Saturn version brings that war to the couch, putting the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of Nod under your command from a controller.

The war is fought over Tiberium, a strange alien crystal spreading across the planet that is both a priceless resource and a creeping hazard. Harvesters gather it, refineries turn it into credits, and those credits become infantry, tanks, artillery and air power. Lose your harvesters and your war machine stalls, and that economic tension is what makes every mission so absorbing. GDI leans on heavy armor and raw firepower while Nod wins with speed, stealth and dirty tricks, so the two campaigns feel very different to play.

Between missions the story unfolds through full-motion video briefings, a mid-90s signature that C&C handled better than almost anyone. Joe Kucan's Kane, the bald, magnetic leader of the Brotherhood, became one of gaming's most memorable villains on the strength of those scenes, and Frank Klepacki's driving industrial-rock score, with tracks like “Act on Instinct” and “Mechanical Man,” is still a fan favorite.

Command & Conquer was among the first big PC strategy hits to make the jump to consoles, and the Saturn port is a fascinating piece of that history, proof that base-building and Tiberium wars could work away from a keyboard and mouse. On a console whose library is dominated by arcade action, it offers something rare: a full-scale strategy campaign with a story worth following all the way to the end.
