Item Description

Once a year, the Paintress wakes, paints a number on her distant Monolith, and everyone of that age dissolves into drifting petals. The people of Lumière call it the Gommage, and they have watched the number fall year after year. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 follows the latest team to set out from the city with one desperate mission: reach the Paintress and stop her before she can paint death again.

French studio Sandfall Interactive built its debut around a world inspired by Belle Époque France, then pushed it somewhere far stranger, full of dreamlike vistas, eerie relics of failed expeditions and the odd, gentle Gestrals. The cast is superb, led by Charlie Cox as the engineer Gustave alongside the young Maelle, the scholar Lune, the serene Sciel and the enigmatic Verso, and the writing gives their grief and humor room to breathe. The story takes turns that players still argue about, and it is best experienced unspoiled.

Combat is where it makes its boldest move. Battles are turn-based, picking skills and spending action points like a classic JRPG, but the enemy's turn is anything but passive. You dodge, parry and jump in real time, and a perfectly timed parry opens the door to a punishing counterattack, while free-aim shots let you pick off weak points between turns. Builds run deep through Pictos, equippable perks that become Luminas you can share across the party once mastered, and each character plays differently, from Lune's elemental Stains to Maelle's shifting fencing stances.

Lorien Testard's soaring, melancholy score became a phenomenon of its own, and the game went on to win Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025 as part of a haul of nine awards. For a first game from a small studio, that is an astonishing achievement, and on PS5 it is a modern RPG that already plays like a landmark of the genre, the rare kind that makes you put the controller down at the credits and just sit for a minute.
