Item Description

Final Fantasy has always been full of things to ride, so it was only a matter of time before somebody lined them all up on a starting grid. Chocobo Racing, Square's 1999 kart racer, gathers creatures and heroes from across its RPG universe, from Chocobo, Mog and Golem to a Goblin, a Black Magician, a White Mage and a hulking Behemoth, and sends them tearing around bright, cartoonish tracks with magic at their fingertips.

The racing has some ideas of its own. Every character carries a special ability that charges up during a race, so choosing a racer is as much about their power as their speed. Magic Stones scattered around each course provide the weapons, some of them stacking for a stronger effect, and bumping an opponent from behind lets you steal what they are holding. Skidding through turns builds speed if you judge it right and spins you out if you overdo it, and a well-timed tap during the countdown launches you off the line.

The heart of the package is Story Mode, narrated by Cid in a pop-up-book style across nine short chapters. Finishing it unlocks secret racers, among them Cactuar, Bahamut, Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, Squall from Final Fantasy VIII and Aya from Parasite Eve, and lets you build a custom racer of your own. Beyond that there are Grand Prix runs, Time Attack, a Relay Race mode and split-screen Versus for two players, all backed by Kenji Ito's arrangements of Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy music.

Reviews were mixed, with critics seeing it as a lighter take on the Mario Kart formula, and that is the best way to enjoy it: a short, sunny spin-off made with obvious affection for the series. The real draw today is the crossover itself, a moment years before Square's later mash-ups when it let favorites from different games loose together, and the sight of Cloud and Squall trading Magic Stones with a Chocobo and a Moogle.
