Item Description
Picture Yuri from Shadow Hearts lining up alongside heroes from Growlanser and Gungrave on the same battlefield. Chaos Wars is a crossover built like a fan's wish list, and that alone makes it one of the most curious tactical RPGs on the PlayStation 2. Idea Factory released it in Japan in 2006, and it reached North America years later through budget publisher O~3 Entertainment as a GameStop exclusive, arriving very late in the console's life.
The story begins with three original heroes, Hyoma Kusaka and his childhood friends Hayatemaru and Shizuku, who are pulled from the real world into the land of Endia. There they meet Rin, the Gatekeeper, cross paths with the Luin, an organization hunting for mysterious Keys, and gradually gather a roster drawn from several companies' RPGs: familiar faces from Shadow Hearts, characters from Growlanser, Gungrave and Code of the Samurai, and faces from Idea Factory's own Blazing Souls and Spectral Souls.
Battles are isometric and turn-based, with a look and feel that will be familiar to anyone who has played Nippon Ichi's strategy RPGs. A special gauge fuels combos, transformations and flashy ultimate moves, which is where the crossover gets its payoff, and each character's Realize form temporarily boosts their power to swing a tough fight back your way. With a roster that eventually runs past fifty characters, plus skills, equipment and upgradable weapons to tinker with, there is a lot of party-building for players who love to experiment.
Then there is the dub. The English voice acting is famously rough and has become part of the game's legend. Reviews landed in mixed territory, with IGN warmer than most on its "open, zippy little ideas." As a late-era oddity with a cast list no other game assembled, it is a conversation piece for any shelf of PS2 strategy RPGs and a curiosity for Shadow Hearts devotees who want one more outing with that party.
