Lords of Shadow 2 opens by handing you Dracula at the height of his power, cutting through an army of Brotherhood knights as they storm his castle with a colossal siege titan. Then the game takes it all away. Gabriel Belmont, the hero turned prince of darkness, wakes centuries later in a modern city that has grown up around the ruins of his home, weak, starving and without his memory, and the rest of the adventure is the long climb back to strength.
MercurySteam's 2014 finale for Konami is built around a dark bargain. Zobek, Gabriel's old enemy, warns that Satan is returning and that his acolytes are preparing the way, and he offers Dracula the eternal rest he craves in exchange for stopping them. The voice cast is a big part of the appeal: Robert Carlyle returns as Gabriel and Patrick Stewart as Zobek, with Jason Isaacs as Satan and Richard Madden joining the story, and the family drama of the Belmont line runs underneath every encounter.
Combat is the game's strongest suit. Dracula's whip handles crowds, the Void Sword drains life from enemies to restore his health, and the Chaos Claws smash through shields and armor, and a mastery system rewards mixing all three rather than leaning on one combo. Between fights, he can turn into mist to slip past bars, become a rat to scurry through vents and possess guards to get through locked doors. The structure is more open than the first game's chapter-by-chapter design, letting you roam back and forth between the gothic castle of the past and the modern city.
Reviews were mixed: critics praised the combat, the bosses and the medieval castle while grumbling about forced stealth sequences and the modern-day streets, and the Xbox 360 version was the best received of the bunch. Óscar Araujo returns with another sweeping orchestral score. It was MercurySteam's last word on Castlevania, closing the Lords of Shadow saga that began in 2010 and continued in Mirror of Fate, and it is the chapter that finally reveals what becomes of Gabriel.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is an action-adventure game and a sequel to the 2010 game, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and the 35th installment on the Castlevania franchise. The game was developed by MercurySteam and published by Konami. This is MercurySteam's last contribution to the franchise. The story is set in both medieval and modern worlds. As in the previous game, the player controls Gabriel Belmont, now known as Dracula, as he fights through an open world. During the game's opening sequence the player is able to control Dracula while he still possesses all his powers as well as all of his weapons. Dracula's main weapon is his Blood Whip, a weapon that is comparable to the Combat Cross from the original Lords of Shadow. Replacing the magic system from the previous game are the Void Sword and the Chaos Claws. The Void Sword can replenish Dracula's health when used while the Chaos Claws can be used to break through enemy defenses and deliver powerful attacks. The story mode in Lords of Shadow 2 has been stated to be far longer than the previous one. The game is mainly an open world allowing the player to choose what route to take.
