Item Description

A towering stone Titan lumbers across a frozen valley, and the only way to stop it is to climb it, clinging to handholds with your Combat Cross while it tries to shake you loose. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is full of moments like that, and it represents the boldest reinvention the series ever attempted. Spanish studio MercurySteam, working with Kojima Productions and published by Konami in 2010, rebuilt Castlevania from scratch as a sweeping 3D action epic.

You play Gabriel Belmont, a knight of the Brotherhood of Light whose wife Marie has been murdered. Rumors of a God Mask with the power to raise the dead set him on a journey against the three Lords of Shadow: the lycan Cornell, the vampire queen Carmilla and the mysterious Lord of the Dead. Robert Carlyle gives Gabriel a raw, grieving voice, Patrick Stewart narrates each chapter as the mentor Zobek, and Natalie Dormer and Jason Isaacs round out a cast few games of its era could match. Óscar Araujo's orchestral score gives the whole thing the scale of a fantasy film.

Combat centers on the Combat Cross, a chained weapon that handles crowds with long sweeping strikes and individual enemies with direct blows. Light Magic heals Gabriel with every hit he lands, Shadow Magic boosts his damage, and juggling the two is the core of the strategy. Between fights you tame wargs and giant spiders as mounts, solve environmental puzzles, battle a mischievous chupacabra that steals your powers and explore a vampire castle home to a music box puzzle and a deeply unsettling vampire child named Laura. Its dozens of levels give it a length and variety that surprise many players.

Lords of Shadow launched a trilogy that continued through Mirror of Fate and Lords of Shadow 2, and its epilogue recasts everything that came before it in a way long-time Castlevania fans still talk about. On a PS3 shelf, it is a handsome piece of the series' history: the moment Castlevania stepped into the God of War era and made a big, gorgeous, gothic adventure of its own.

About the game

Gabriel Belmont learns of a mask with the power to raise the dead and sets out on a mission to obtain it to bring his recently murdered wife back from the dead. Lords of Shadow builds upon the combat systems first explored in this series in 2003's Lament of Innocence and adds more violent kills to the mix. Inspiration for these changes seems to have come from 2005's God of War.
