Item Description

"What a horrible night to have a curse." Few lines of 8-bit text are as instantly recognizable, and few sequels took a bigger swing than Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. Rather than sending Simon Belmont back through another linear castle, Konami turned him loose on Transylvania itself, an interconnected world of towns, forests, graveyards and cliffs that you explore at your own pace and in your own order.

Simon survived his battle with Dracula, but the Count left him cursed. To lift it he must recover Dracula's scattered remains, his rib, heart, eye, nail and ring, from a series of mansions, then carry them to the ruins of Castlevania to resurrect and defeat him once more. Hearts now double as currency, so you trade with merchants for holy water, garlic, laurels and better whips, and gathering enough of them levels Simon up. A day and night cycle changes everything: when the sun goes down, the towns fill with monsters and the enemies outside grow stronger.

The game is famous, and sometimes infamous, for its cryptic hints. Villagers speak in riddles, some of them lie outright, and a few secrets, like kneeling with a red crystal at the right cliff to summon a whirlwind, have become legend among NES players. That mystery is part of the charm. Exploring with a notebook beside you, trying holy water on suspicious floors and piecing together half-understood clues gives Simon's Quest a mood unlike anything else on the console. The soundtrack is just as memorable: "Bloody Tears" made its debut here and has returned across the series ever since.

Simon's Quest is the bridge between the original Castlevania and the exploration-driven games the series later became known for, and you can feel Konami working out ideas years before they turned into a formula. It also rewards a speedy run with a better ending, which gives veterans a reason to come back. As the middle chapter of the NES trilogy and the game that first tried to make Dracula's world feel open and lived in, it is a fascinating, atmospheric piece of the Belmont saga to play on the hardware it was built for.

About the game

Castlevania was a cakewalk compared to this bloody curse. You thought you had the Prince of Darkness defanged - eh, Simon Belmont? Well think again, 'cause according to a damsel in distress, evil Count Dracula has left a horrifying curse in his wake. And the only hope you have of ending the terror is to destroy his missing body parts! Talk about your frightening quest, searching a maze of mansions, graveyards and dark, eerie forests - each guarded by man-eating werewolves, fire-throwing zombies and other devilish demons. Your grim chances are kept alive in Transylvania, where cowardly villagers offer clues to the whereabouts of Dracula's remains. And where you'll purchase magic weapons, including silver knives and flame whips. But beware the night. For when the sun disappears, Dracula's curse grows deadlier. And your chances grow dimmer and dimmer.
