Hector walked away from Dracula once already. He was one of the Count's Devil Forgemasters, a craftsman who could shape living familiars out of demonic power, and he abandoned that life to live among ordinary people. Then Isaac, a rival Forgemaster still devoted to his dead master, had Hector's fiancée Rosaly put to death, and Castlevania: Curse of Darkness becomes the story of a man taking up his old, forbidden craft for the sake of revenge.
That craft is the game's signature idea. Through Devil Forgery, Hector creates Innocent Devils, companion creatures that fight at his side, reach places he can't and help solve puzzles, and they level up and evolve as the adventure goes on. How you fight shapes how they grow, since the crystals that drive their evolution depend on the weapons you favor, so raising your roster feels closer to a monster-raising RPG than standard action fare. Hector himself wields swords, spears, axes and fist weapons in fast real-time 3D combat, and a crafting system that turns materials stolen from enemies into new gear gives every area a reason to linger.
Set in 1479, three years after Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, it is a direct sequel to that NES classic, and Trevor Belmont himself appears as a wary vampire hunter who doesn't trust a former servant of Dracula. The supporting cast is one of the more intriguing in the series: Saint Germain, a mysterious time traveler urging Hector to abandon his quest; Julia, a young witch living in exile; and Zead, a kindly holy man feeding Hector information, whose true identity is a twist longtime fans will appreciate. Koji Igarashi produced and wrote it, Ayami Kojima's gothic artwork sets the tone, and Michiru Yamane and Yuka Watanabe composed the score.
Critics at the time praised the combat, the Innocent Devil system and the music while finding some environments repetitive, and the game has since found a loyal following among series fans. Finishing the story unlocks a mode starring Trevor, complete with the Vampire Killer whip and classic sub-weapons like the axe, cross, holy water and stopwatch. Paired with Lament of Innocence, it completes the PlayStation 2's two 3D Castlevania adventures, and it is the one to choose for deeper character building and a darker revenge story told from inside Dracula's own ranks.
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness is a direct sequel to Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. The game differs from its predecessor in a number of ways, including a more complex, action-adventure style of gameplay featuring character growth based on accumulated experience points. Master the unique new skills of Devil Forgery to develop and enhance Innocent Devils - allies that will help to conquer enemies, evade traps and solve challenging puzzles.
