Item Description

In mid-80s Japan, Hudson turned score attack into a summer festival. Its Caravan tour traveled the country with a featured shooter each year, and kids lined up to see who could rack up the biggest score in a strict time limit, often with Takahashi Meijin, the company's famously fast-fingered spokesman, on hand to show them how it was done. Caravan Shooting Collection, released by Hudson for the Super Famicom in 1995, gathers the first three of those tournament shooters in one cartridge: Star Force, Star Soldier and Hector '87.

Each game is a vertical shooter built for a very particular kind of play. Star Force is the Famicom adaptation of the Tehkan arcade game that launched the Caravan tradition, a lean, fast test of reflexes. Star Soldier, Hudson's own follow-up, became the series most closely tied to the caravans and to Takahashi Meijin's rapid-fire legend. Hector '87, released in North America as Starship Hector, mixes vertical shooting stages with side-view sections for a more varied ride.

The collection keeps the games close to their Famicom originals, with only minor cosmetic changes to the graphics, while the sound received improvements in many cases. The real draw is how the format shapes the experience. These games reward aggressive, efficient destruction rather than cautious survival: every enemy is points, every second counts, and the urge to chase one more run is built into the design.

For shoot 'em up fans it is a compact history lesson in how score-chasing culture took shape in Japan, all on one Super Famicom cartridge, and a fun way to see whether your thumbs can keep up with a tournament that ran in shopping centers over thirty years ago.
