For years, arcade regulars argued over whose fighters would win if Capcom and SNK ever met. Capcom vs. SNK finally settled it on screen, and this enhanced Pro edition brought the dream match home to the original PlayStation in 2002, putting Street Fighter's Ryu and Chun-Li in the same ring as The King of Fighters' Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami.
The heart of the game is the Ratio system. Every fighter carries a ratio value from one to four, and your team has to add up to four, so you might field a single powerhouse, a pair of mid-weights or a squad of four lighter hitters. Then you pick a Groove: the Capcom-style C-Groove with its multi-level super gauge, or the SNK-style S-Groove, which lets you charge your meter by hand and unleash unlimited supers when your health runs low. Those two choices reshape every match before the first punch is thrown, and they give the game a strategic layer neither company's own series quite matches.
The Pro update adds Joe Higashi from Fatal Fury and Dan Hibiki from the Street Fighter Alpha series, along with new moves for existing fighters and new modes of play. The PlayStation version made some concessions to aging hardware, including short loading pauses between rounds and pared-back graphics and sound compared with the arcade and Dreamcast releases, but the fighting system made the trip with its depth intact, and a roster stretching from Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui to Morrigan and Akuma is still a thrill to scroll through.
Arriving so late in the PlayStation's life makes it one of the last big 2D fighters on the system, a fitting send-off for a console that hosted so many great ones. For collectors, it closes out the Capcom and SNK rivalry on Sony's first console; for players, it is a crossover with real tactical depth and the perfect warm-up for the bigger Capcom vs. SNK 2 that followed.
An updated version of the original Capcom vs. SNK titled Capcom vs. SNK Pro was released on the Arcade Sega NAOMI GD-ROM hardware (2000), Dreamcast (2001) and PlayStation (2002), the latter suffering from slight load times between rounds and downgraded graphics and sound due to hardware limitations. New additions included Joe Higashi (from Fatal Fury) and Dan Hibiki (from Street Fighter Alpha), new moves for existing characters, and new modes of play.
