Item Description

Four soldiers from four different armies sit in a Gestapo interrogation room in Berlin, and the only way out is to remember how they got there. That is the clever frame Sledgehammer Games built around the campaign of Call of Duty: Vanguard. It opens in the last days of the war in Europe with a raid on a train rolling into Hamburg, as the squad that will become Task Force One hunts for intelligence on Project Phoenix, a secret plan to keep the Nazi regime alive under senior Nazi official Hermann Freisinger. From there the story jumps back through each operator's war, told out of order like a set of interrogation transcripts.

Those flashbacks give the campaign real variety. Arthur Kingsley, a British paratrooper, drops into Normandy during Operation Tonga. Polina Petrova, a Red Army nurse turned sniper, fights through the shattered streets of Stalingrad. Wade Jackson, a U.S. Navy dive-bomber pilot, takes to the skies over Midway and later fights on Bougainville, while Australian demolitions expert Lucas Riggs, one of the Rats of Tobruk, blows his way across the North African desert to El Alamein. Each chapter has its own pace and personality, and Bear McCreary's score gives the whole thing the sweep of a prestige war film.

Multiplayer was built on the engine introduced with 2019's Modern Warfare, with a large launch map pool, destructible cover that can be shot or blasted apart, and a Combat Pacing system that let players choose how frantic their lobbies would be. Champion Hill, a round-robin squad tournament in the spirit of Gunfight, was its signature new mode. Treyarch co-developed Zombies, whose launch map, Der Anfang, mixed round-based survival with objectives and tied into the Dark Aether story begun in Black Ops Cold War.

Vanguard was Sledgehammer's second trip to World War II after 2017's Call of Duty: WWII, and it takes a different angle on the era: less a march across Europe than a globe-trotting origin story for special forces, with a multinational cast the series rarely gives this much room. The campaign is where it shines, a compact, cinematic war story with strong performances and some of the franchise's most varied set pieces. On PlayStation 4 it is an easy way to own the 2021 entry and see where Call of Duty took the WWII setting next.
