Call of Duty: Ghosts is the one with the dog, and Riley earned the attention. The German shepherd fights alongside his handlers, takes down enemies on command and gets his own stealth sequences, where you steer him through tall grass toward an unsuspecting patrol. It is a small touch that says a lot about a game determined to shake things up after the Modern Warfare trilogy.

Infinity Ward's story imagines an America broken by ODIN, an orbital weapon turned against its own cities, with a South American superpower called the Federation pressing the advantage. Logan Walker and his brother Hesh grow up on their father Elias's stories about the Ghosts, a legendary elite unit, before joining them in a long war against Gabriel Rorke, a former Ghost turned relentless hunter. The campaign covers striking ground, from a firefight aboard a space station in orbit to an underwater infiltration and the ruined suburbs of a shattered homeland, and it ends on a cliffhanger the series has never picked back up.

Multiplayer brought its own list of firsts. Ghosts let players create female soldiers for the first time in the series, added destructible and changing map elements, and introduced fast modes like Cranked, where every kill starts a countdown you have to beat with another kill, and Blitz, a race to dash into the enemy's scoring zone. Squads mode built teams of AI-controlled soldiers. Then there is Extinction, a four-player co-op mode, made with help from Neversoft, that pits a team against waves of alien creatures called Cryptids while drilling into their hives. It became a cult favorite and still comes up whenever players debate the series' best co-op modes.

Ghosts also launched alongside the PlayStation 4 in 2013, which makes it a true launch-day game for the console. Its reputation among longtime players is mixed, but the parts that worked, Riley, Extinction and that space-to-sea campaign variety, have aged into fond memories, and it is the one and only chapter of the Ghosts story Infinity Ward set out to tell.
