Item Description

The first time you boost-jump onto a rooftop, dash sideways out of a grenade's blast and slam back down behind an opponent, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare makes its whole argument. This was Sledgehammer Games' first turn leading a mainline Call of Duty, and the studio strapped powered exoskeletons onto every soldier, turning a series built on corridors and sightlines into something vertical, fast and a little bit unhinged.

The campaign follows Jack Mitchell, a Marine who loses an arm in the opening battle for Seoul and is recruited into Atlas, the private military company run by Jonathan Irons. Kevin Spacey played Irons through full performance capture, and the casting was one of the game's big talking points in 2014. The story moves from Lagos to Detroit to a set piece on San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, and missions keep handing you new exosuit abilities, including cloaking and a grappling hook. It also produced a lasting slice of internet history: an early funeral scene asks you to press a button to pay respects, and that prompt became a meme the series still gets teased about.

Multiplayer was built around the same movement. Boost jumps, dodges and slides changed the rhythm of every map, while the Pick 13 create-a-class system let players spend points on weapons, perks, exo abilities and scorestreaks however they liked. Advanced Warfare also introduced Supply Drops, crates of gear and weapon variants with their own stat tweaks, a system the series would lean on for years. For co-op, Exo Survival throws a squad of up to four at escalating waves of enemies, with upgrades earned between rounds.

Advanced Warfare opened what players call the series' jetpack era, the run of futuristic, wall-climbing shooters that continued through Black Ops III and Infinite Warfare before Sledgehammer itself steered the franchise back to the ground with WWII. Whichever side of that debate you land on, this is where the experiment started, and its campaign, with its gleaming near-future hardware and a villain who owns every scene he is in, is still a slick, big-budget sci-fi action ride on PS4.

About the game

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is a first-person shooter with single-player and multiplayer modes. It is set in a near future where powered exoskeletons give soldiers enhanced mobility such as boosting, dashing, and jumping, alongside conventional and directed-energy weapons. The campaign follows a single protagonist through a cinematic story, while multiplayer and a wave-based cooperative survival mode build on the exoskeleton movement and a loadout customization system.
