Hunting games usually mean tree stands and whitetail woods, but Cabela's African Safari aims for something much bigger: the open plains of Africa and the ultimate trophy challenge, the Big Five. Leopard, lion, elephant, rhino and Cape buffalo are the animals that earned that name because they are the most dangerous to pursue on foot, and tracking them down is the heart of this 2006 PlayStation 2 release from Activision Value and the Cabela's outdoors brand.

You plan your expedition by choosing a seven, ten or fourteen day safari, then head out on a mix of hunts that includes open safaris, game tracking, baiting and herd hunting. The hunting grounds hold more than thirty species, from sable, kudu and gemsbok to eland, waterbuck and impala, so there is more to the trip than the headline animals. Reading tracks, closing distance quietly and choosing the right moment to take a shot rewards patience, while the dangerous game adds a jolt of tension when an animal decides to stand its ground.

It is an approachable outdoor game rather than a punishing simulation, with multiplayer for friends who want to compete over the biggest trophy. It trades North American hunting grounds for a far more exotic backdrop, and devoting a whole game to the African bush is what sets it apart from the rest of the Cabela's lineup on the PS2.
