Burnout 2: Point of Impact is the game where Criterion worked out what Burnout was really about. The 2001 original had the speed and the traffic; the sequel, released on the PlayStation 2 in October 2002, sharpened everything around one gloriously reckless idea: the more dangerously you drive, the faster you get to go.
Boost is earned by flirting with disaster. Drive on the wrong side of the road, drift through corners at full speed, thread past oncoming traffic by inches and launch off jumps, and the meter fills. Empty a full bar in one go without stopping and you earn a Burnout, and the real masters chain them together, staying in a near-permanent state of boost while the road blurs past. Crash, and you lose control, lose your boost and watch the race slip away while a fresh car is dropped back in. That tension between greed and survival is the series' DNA, and Point of Impact is where it is at its purest.
It is also the game that introduced Crash Mode. Each scenario places you at a busy junction with traffic that is not randomized, and the goal is to find the angle, the speed and the exact point of impact that causes the most expensive pileup possible. It plays like a destructive puzzle, and it became one of the most loved parts of the series. Pursuit mode flips the script by putting you behind the wheel of a police cruiser, ramming a fleeing criminal off the road to arrest him and unlock his car.
Critics loved it, with the PS2 version scoring 86 on Metacritic, and Edge later placed it on its list of the 100 best video games. Acclaim's UK marketing even offered to pay drivers' speeding tickets, a stunt quickly abandoned after government objections. This was the last Burnout published by Acclaim before Electronic Arts took over the series, and the PS2 got it first, months ahead of the expanded Xbox Developer's Cut. Takedown would turn the series toward aggression, but the precise, boost-chaining driving here is what fans still come back to Point of Impact for.
Burnout is a street racing game focused around speed and crashing. Unlike many games which focus on closed course driving, you get to drive through cities with real traffic and city infrastructure. Designers have built an entire city and surrounding areas, and implement the race courses throughput the countie's streets. As a result, many times certain parts of race-courses interlace with other parts of other races. As well, instead of encouraging strategic driving and safe driving, Burnout strongly encourages offensive driving. Driving on the wrong side of the road, barely missing passing traffic, drifting, and jumps all add to your boost "burnout" meter. Speed boosts and jumps aid your attempt to dive past buses, trucks and anything else that gets in the way. The more offensive and dangerous your driving is, the more boost you get!
