Item Description

Two little bubble dragons, a single screen of ledges and a room full of monsters waiting to be sealed in bubbles: Taito's Bubble Bobble has one of the purest hooks in arcade history, and this Game Gear cartridge puts it in the palm of your hand. Bub and Bob blow bubbles to trap wandering enemies, then jump into them to pop them, sending the defeated monsters bouncing across the stage before they land as fruit and treats. Pop a whole cluster at once and the screen bursts with points, which is the moment that has kept people coming back since 1986.

This version is based on the Master System game, released in Japan as Final Bubble Bobble, and its stages have been condensed to suit the Game Gear's smaller screen resolution. That changes the feel in an interesting way. Layouts are tighter, enemies reach you sooner, and working out how to herd a room full of monsters into a single chain of pops becomes a compact little puzzle of its own. The rhythm of the original is intact: bubbles drift, rise and pile up in corners, and you learn to use them as stepping stones and traps as much as weapons.

Bubble Bobble was the creation of Taito designer Fukio Mitsuji, and few arcade games have cast a longer shadow over their own company. It led directly to Rainbow Islands and later spun off the Puzzle Bobble games, known to many players as Bust-a-Move, yet the original's bright, cheerful look and its relentlessly catchy theme music are what most people picture when they hear the name.

On the Game Gear it fits the hardware beautifully. Stages are short enough to clear a few on a break, and the score chase keeps pulling you back for one more round. It is a faithful-feeling handheld take on a cornerstone of arcade design, and exactly the sort of cartridge that justifies keeping fresh batteries in a Game Gear.
