Two stories run side by side in Breath of Fire IV, and only one of them belongs to a hero. Ryu turns up in a desert crater with no memory and falls in with Nina, princess of Wyndia, who is crossing a war-torn land in search of her missing sister, Elina. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, an ancient emperor named Fou-Lu awakens, and the chapters you play as him are cold, imperious and quietly devastating. Watching those two paths draw closer gives the game a tension few RPGs of its era attempted.
Battles keep the series' turn-based foundation but add real strategy. Three characters fight at a time while the rest wait in reserve, and you can swap them in mid-battle, so the whole party stays involved. Spells and skills chain into combos, with certain sequences producing stronger or entirely new effects, which turns building a good turn order into a puzzle of its own. Ryu's dragon transformations return in spectacular form, and masters to train under, fishing spots and a faerie colony to manage give the world plenty of side texture.
The art is a high point. Hand-drawn sprites with wonderfully fluid animation move through rotating 3D environments, a blend that has aged far more gracefully than many polygon-heavy RPGs of the time. Nina, the Woren warrior Cray and the rest of the party carry the warmer half of the story, while Fou-Lu's chapters explore war, betrayal and what humanity looks like through the eyes of a god, giving the game a moral weight the earlier entries rarely reached.
Many fans rank this as the finest Breath of Fire, and it was the last traditional entry before Dragon Quarter took the franchise in a radically different direction. Playing it on the PlayStation means seeing that sprite work exactly as it was drawn for the hardware, and following Ryu and Fou-Lu toward their meeting makes for an ending that lingers long after the credits.
Breath of Fire IV is a single-player game that continues the story with these "dragon people," who gave their lives to eradicate the evil goddess and restore peace in their world. This time around, battle has broken out between two powerful continents, and the fair Princess Elena has disappeared during a tour of the war-torn region. The princess's sister, Nina, who reigns o'er the Windia Kingdom, vows to retrieve her missing sibling. She meets Ryu along the way, who joins the epic quest
