Item Description

It begins with a dragon. Miners working the Dauna Mine pull a small whelp out of the rock, and before long that creature has become a boy named Ryu, the last of a clan the world would rather forget. Breath of Fire III follows him from that strange beginning through a childhood spent among thieves and on into adulthood, and the question of what his people were, and why they vanished, drives one of Capcom's most absorbing role-playing stories.

Ryu's dragon power is the series' signature, and here it gets a clever overhaul. Instead of fixed transformations, he collects dragon genes and splices them together in battle, so different combinations produce different dragon forms, and experimenting to find the strong ones is half the fun. Around that core sits a deep set of systems: skills can be learned by examining enemies as they use them, and party members can apprentice themselves to masters scattered across the world, each one shaping how a character grows. Fishing becomes a full-fledged pastime, and there is even a faerie village to build up as the adventure goes on.

The companions are a memorable crew: Nina, the winged princess of Wyndia; Rei, the quick-tempered thief who takes young Ryu in; the inventor Momo; the towering warrior Garr, whose past is tangled up with the dragons; and Peco, a walking plant who is far tougher than he looks. Their hand-drawn sprites are full of personality and animation, set against 3D environments seen from an angled overhead view, a look that gives the whole game a storybook quality.

This was the series' first PlayStation entry and the point where Breath of Fire grew into something more reflective and ambitious than its Super Nintendo roots. The two-part structure lets the story land with real weight, and the side systems reward players who like to linger, experiment and fill every corner of the map. Start here, with Ryu's first steps out of the mine, and the darker turn of the fourth game makes even more sense.
