Item Description

Somewhere between a Saturday-morning superhero show and a fever dream sits Bravoman. Namco's comic action game stars Hitoshi Nakamura, a car insurance salaryman who meets the alien Alpha Man on his walk home and is transformed into a bionic hero with telescoping limbs. His enemy is Dr. Bomb, a mad scientist with a robot army and a plan to take over the world, and the whole thing is played for laughs.

Bravoman was the brainchild of Namco composer Norio Nakagata, who conceived it as an homage to the tokusatsu hero films of the 1960s, and former Toei Animation staff gave it a distinctly anime look. Nakamura himself is a caricature of Masaya Nakamura, Namco's president at the time, to whom the game was dedicated. The 1988 arcade original stayed largely a Japanese phenomenon, and this TurboGrafx-16 version is how it reached players overseas.

On the TurboGrafx, the village of Nitta becomes a 22-stage campaign that alternates between action stages on the ground and shooting stages underwater. The control system is the hook: how long you hold a button decides how high Bravoman jumps and how far his stretching punches and kicks reach, so you are constantly judging distance as well as timing. Defeated enemies drop Luck Symbols, and handing them to the robotic Lottery Man earns recovery items and power-ups.

It was a hit in Japan for its humor, while Western critics of the day were much cooler on its mechanics and difficulty, so think of it as a gloriously odd Namco curiosity rather than a polished brawler. The character later got a second life through Namco Bandai's ShiftyLook webcomic and animated series, but this cartridge is the original deadpan superhero parody, and nothing else on the TurboGrafx-16 looks or feels quite like it.

About the game

The village of Nitta has been invaded by the army of Dr. Bomb, an evil scientist who is plotting to take over the world. Facing this crisis is Bravoman, who received his powers from Alpha Man to stand up against Dr. Bomb in the name of justice. The village of Nitta consists of 22 stages -- action stages that take place on the ground and shooting stages that take place underwater. Action stages use a unique control system in which the height of a jump and the distance of an attack changes depending on how long players hold down the button. Players collect the Luck Symbols that appear when they defeat enemies and give them to Lottery Man to get recovery and power-up items. Stop Dr. Bomb and bring peace to the village of Nitta and the rest of the world.
