Item Description

Before he was the smug, mask-wearing tyrant of Borderlands 2, Handsome Jack was just Jack: a mid-level Hyperion programmer with big ideas, a grudge against the people who doubted him and a space station that needed saving. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel tells that story, and it is a sharper, stranger origin than anyone expected. Athena, captured by Lilith and the Crimson Raiders, narrates the whole adventure as an interrogation, which lets the game wink at its own unreliable storytelling while it slowly reveals how a would-be hero curdled into a monster.

The setting does most of the heavy lifting. The action moves off Pandora to its moon, Elpis, where low gravity turns every firefight into something closer to a dogfight. Oz kits keep you breathing and double as jet packs, so you boost over cover, hang in the air to line up a headshot and then butt-slam down into a crowd of enemies. Oxygen is a resource you watch, cryo weapons freeze enemies solid so you can shatter them, and lasers join the series' gun-crazy arsenal. The Grinder, which melts three pieces of loot into one new item, gives the endless stream of drops a satisfying new use.

The four new Vault Hunters are some of the series' most playable. Athena blocks fire with her Kinetic Aspis shield and hurls it back, Wilhelm rebuilds himself into more machine than man with his drones Wolf and Saint, Nisha the Lawbringer locks on with a gunslinger's Showdown, and Claptrap finally becomes playable, with a VaultHunter.EXE skill that picks a random, often hilarious ability every time you use it. Their battle against Colonel Zarpedon and the Lost Legion for control of the Helios station plays out to the drawled Australian voices of the Elpis locals.

Developed by 2K Australia with Gearbox, it was the Canberra studio's final game, and it plays like a team swinging for the fences with the series' toolkit. The PlayStation 3 version is one of the original releases, supporting two-player split-screen on one TV and built around four-player online co-op. Weirder and more experimental than the mainline entries, it fills in the gap between Borderlands and Borderlands 2 and finishes the job of making Jack the franchise's greatest villain.
