Pandora's moon Elpis has appeared in the skies over Kairos, and its arrival has shattered the barrier that kept this ancient world hidden for ages. That premise hands Gearbox a brand-new planet to fill with guns, gangs and gallows humor. Set six years after Borderlands 3, Borderlands 4 drops a fresh crew of Vault Hunters into a world ruled by the Timekeeper, a dictator who controls Kairos through his Order and an army of synthetic followers, and who has sealed himself inside the very Vault the heroes have come to crack.
The four playable Vault Hunters each bring a different way to wreck a battlefield. Vex is the series' newest Siren, Rafa is an Exo-Soldier, Harlowe is a Gravitar and Amon is a Forgeknight, and each grows through branching skill trees that reward tinkering with builds long after the credits. Loot is still the engine of everything. Procedurally generated weapons pour out of enemies and chests in ridiculous variety, and the little jolt of checking the stats on a fresh drop is as addictive here as it has ever been in the series.
The biggest change is the world itself. Kairos is one seamless space with no loading screens between areas, the most open structure Borderlands has attempted, and a grappling hook, new traversal tools and vehicles turn simply crossing the map into part of the fun. Up to four players can share the chaos in co-op, and the humor now bubbles up from play as much as from cutscenes, with Vault Hunters reacting to what you actually do in a fight. Critics were warmer about the gunplay, build variety and side content than about the story, which several reviewers found forgettable, so come for the loop and the loot rather than the plot.
That trade feels right for a series that has always lived and died by the next gun drop. This is the entry where Borderlands stopped stitching its maps together zone by zone and built a single continuous planet to get lost in, and on PlayStation 5 it marks the point where the looter-shooter rebuilt its foundations without losing its sense of humor.
