Item Description
Borderlands 3 is the entry where the series finally leaves Pandora, and the galaxy waiting beyond it is louder, stranger and more crowded with guns than anything Gearbox had built before. The villains are Troy and Tyreen Calypso, twin livestreaming cult leaders who have rallied Pandora's bandit clans into the Children of the Vault and command them like influencers with an army. Stopping them takes you from Pandora's dust and scrap to the neon corporate towers of Promethea, the overgrown swamps of Eden-6 and the monastery world of Athenas, with the starship Sanctuary III serving as your roving home base between missions.
Each of the four new Vault Hunters plays like a different game. Amara the Siren slams enemies with giant ethereal fists, FL4K the Beastmaster fights alongside loyal pets, Moze the Gunner climbs into Iron Bear, a walking mech, and Zane the Operative juggles a combat drone, a holographic double and a portable barrier. Every one of them has deep skill trees to build around, and the loot is as gleefully ridiculous as ever: Tediore guns explode when you toss them away to reload, Atlas weapons can steer their bullets onto tagged targets, and many Maliwan guns switch elements at the press of a button. New movement, including sliding and mantling up ledges, makes firefights quicker and more fluid than in any earlier Borderlands.
The Ultimate Edition brings the base game together with all six content add-ons and the bonus cosmetic packs, and those add-ons hold some of the series' best material. Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jackpot sends you through Handsome Jack's abandoned space casino, Guns, Love, and Tentacles crashes the Lovecraftian wedding of Sir Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs, Bounty of Blood turns the game into a frontier western, and Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck takes you inside the head of the series' favorite masked lunatic. Designer's Cut added a fourth skill tree for every Vault Hunter along with the Arms Race mode, while Director's Cut layered on more endgame challenges.
The Switch version arrived in 2023 as a remarkably sturdy squeeze of an enormous game onto Nintendo's hardware, and Nintendo Life called it an easy recommendation, judging the visual trade-offs well worth it for play on the go. Co-op here is built for two players on their own systems rather than split-screen, which suits a pair of friends with a Switch each. What you get is the complete third chapter of the Borderlands saga, expansions and all, in a form that travels with you.
