Item Description

Hinako Shirai had one dream, and it ended with an injury that took ballet away from her. Blue Reflection begins there, in the quiet ache of a high school girl who no longer knows who she is, and turns that loss into a magical-girl RPG about friendship, memory and finding a reason to move again. Developed by Gust, the studio behind the Atelier series, and released in 2017, it is a gentle, distinctive and very stylish role-playing game unlike most on the PlayStation 4.

Hinako's world changes when two classmates, the Shijou sisters Yuzuki and Lime, reveal that she has the power of a Reflector, able to enter the Common, a dreamlike dimension shaped by the emotions of the people around her. By helping the girls at school with their troubles and protecting their feelings in the Common, Hinako can restore what is broken in them, and perhaps recover her own dream. Mel Kishida's soft, luminous character designs give the game an instantly recognizable look, and the Common's dreamlike landscapes match them beautifully.

Days are split between school life and battle. Hanging out with classmates earns fragments, pieces of their memories that grant combat skills and bonuses, while growth points let you shape each heroine's strengths in attack, defense or support rather than following a fixed leveling path. Battles are turn-based, with a timeline that shows who acts next, skills that knock enemies back down the order and a powerful Overdrive state that lets a heroine act several times in a row. In the big boss fights, friends rally around the Reflectors to lend support, turning the game's themes of connection into something you can feel on the battlefield.

Reviews were mixed on its pacing, but its atmosphere, music and heartfelt story earned it a devoted following, and it grew into a franchise with the anime Blue Reflection Ray and the sequel Blue Reflection: Second Light. Its blend of Gust's warmth, magical-girl transformation and slow, character-driven storytelling makes the original the place where the Blue Reflection story begins.
