Some games are about the destination; Blue Fire is about the leap. ROBI Studios' 2021 action-platformer, published by Graffiti Games, drops a small, agile hero into the desolate kingdom of Penumbra and asks you to master movement until wall runs, jumps and sword swings flow together as naturally as breathing. It is a striking mix of 3D Zelda-style exploration, Souls-flavored combat and the precision platforming of classic 3D Mario, wrapped in a melancholy world worth getting lost in.
Penumbra is a kingdom fallen into shadow, scattered with crumbling temples, overgrown ruins and the few scattered survivors still clinging on. You explore it piece by piece, taking on strange quests from its inhabitants, uncovering hidden secrets and diving into temple dungeons that mix puzzles, traps and boss fights. Combat is built on a pair of swords, a quick dash and a well-timed parry, and new blade pairs found in treasure chests bring more damage and fresh designs.
The heart of the game, though, is the Voids. Hidden throughout the world, these optional challenge rooms float over an endless drop and test your platforming skill with floating blocks, moving hazards and tight jumps that grow fiendishly demanding as the game goes on. Clearing them earns extra health, and they are where the game's platforming shines brightest. Spirits add another layer, equippable essences of supernatural beings that grant new abilities and let you tune your hero to your playstyle, while sword upgrades and heart-meter increases reward exploration.
Reviewers singled out its responsive movement and compared the Voids to the secret stages of Super Mario Sunshine and the Rifts of A Hat in Time, high company for an indie platformer. It is a compact adventure that never outstays its welcome, and on PlayStation 4 it offers the soul of a 3D platformer with the bite of an action RPG: a challenging indie gem that rewards persistence with some of the most satisfying jumps of its generation.
