Item Description

A Bloody Roar match can turn on a single button press. Fill the beast gauge, trigger the transformation, and a fighter who was nearly finished erupts into a wolf, a lion or a chameleon, claws out, stronger than before and with part of their lost health restored. Bloody Roar 3 brought that wild hook to the PlayStation 2 in 2001, published in North America by Activision, after debuting in Japanese arcades at the end of 2000 on Namco's PS2-based System 246 hardware.

Developed by Hudson Soft and Eighting, it gathers the series' shape-shifting cast for its PS2 debut. Yugo the wolf and Alice the rabbit lead the returning roster, joined by Long the tiger and his clone Shenlong, Gado the lion, Bakuryu the mole, the half-beast Uriko, Stun the insect, Shina the leopard, Jenny the bat and the deeply strange Busuzima the chameleon. The newcomer is Xion the Unborn, and two more can be unlocked: Kohryu, an iron mole, and Uranus, a chimera.

The appeal is in how each character effectively plays as two fighters. In human form you work with one set of tools; transform and a second, more ferocious move set takes over, designed around the creature's body, so reading when an opponent is about to change is as important as any combo. The pace is fast and the spectacle is loud, and split-screen versus on the couch is where it shines brightest, with friends trading transformations at the worst possible moments.

Critics were divided in 2001, some wanting more depth to rival Tekken and others enjoying it as a fresh, fast change of pace, but that divide is part of the series' cult charm. The franchise continued with Bloody Roar Extreme and Bloody Roar 4 and then went quiet, which gives these PS2-era entries a pull of their own: nothing else plays quite like a 3D fighter where your best comeback might be turning into a rabbit.

About the game

Bloody Roar 3 pits 12 outlandish combatants against each other in one of the most ambitious 3D fighting games to grace the PlayStation 2. Returning from Hudson's widely acclaimed PS1 titles are Stun, Long and Jenny, each of who brings a unique fighting skill to the arena. During each bout, players build an energy bar based on the number of successful kicks and punches they land on their opponent. As the bar fills, players can then morph their combatant into terrifying manimals from beasts such as lions and tigers to moles. The morph, in turn, unlocks a secondary control system specifically designed with each creature's combat moves and appearance in mind. In effect, this offers players two distinct combat types within one game.
