Item Description
Blazing Strike wears its influences on its sleeve, and that is exactly the appeal. RareBreed Makes Games, led by Mark Minkyu Chung, spent years crafting a 2D fighter in the mold of late-1990s and early-2000s arcade classics such as Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and Aksys Games brought it to the PlayStation 4 in 2024. The result is a lavishly animated pixel-art fighter where costumes ripple and every hit lands with weight.
The roster launched with fourteen fighters, each with a distinct style, among them Pink, MJ, Mochizuki, Jake and Mateo, with a cast that runs from a weapon-wielding scrap merchant to a ninja who guards her dead husband's soul. The engine runs on a four-button layout and a dedicated Rush button whose meter powers dash cancels and short Rush Attack auto-combos, and lets you cancel attacks to link moves that would never connect otherwise. Blazing Rush grants unlimited Rush for about ten seconds at the cost of losing it for the rest of the round, and nearly every character has a unique Rush Ability of their own. Defensive play gets the same attention, with Rush Parries to break combos and 3rd Strike-style parries for players brave enough to read an attack.
Alongside Arcade, Versus and Training modes, a story mode set in a ruined, post-apocalyptic world under a ruthless government plays out through portrait dialogue and comic-style art panels, and the sprite work recalls Capcom's CPS3 era. Local versus is where the game shines brightest.
Blazing Strike is the kind of passion project that rarely gets a physical release, and fighting game fans who grew up on Capcom and SNK will recognize the love poured into every frame.
