Item Description

What if the dragons were the heroes and the knights were the menace? That is the joke at the heart of Blazing Dragons, the comedy created by Monty Python's Terry Jones with Gavin Scott, and this 1996 point-and-click adventure turns it into a full-length quest. The setting is Camelhot, a dragon kingdom where the young Flicker is hopelessly in love with Princess Flame and has no chance of winning her hand, for the simple reason that he is not a knight.

Then the King announces a tournament with the princess and the crown as the prize, and Flicker sets out to become a dragon knight by any means necessary. That means classic adventure-game work: collecting odd objects, finding even odder uses for them and talking his way past an eccentric cast of dragons and humans. Along the way he stumbles onto a human plot to seize the kingdom by kidnapping the princess, which gives all the comedy a proper quest to hang on.

The humor is where the game earns its cult following. Arthurian legend gets lampooned from every angle, the puns arrive at a relentless clip, and the dialogue is performed by a voice cast that features several well-known names. The bright, cartoon visuals look like an animated series come to life, which is fitting, since the game arrived alongside the TV show and shares its characters and tone.

Like the friendliest graphic adventures of its day, it is built so that Flicker can never die and never wander into a dead end where a puzzle becomes impossible, so you can poke at every hotspot and try every silly combination without fear. Point-and-click adventures are scarce on the Saturn, and one this steeped in Python-style silliness is scarcer still, which makes Blazing Dragons a charming change of pace on a console better known for arcade fighters and racers.

About the game

A video game based on the television series was created for the Sega Saturn and PlayStation consoles. In a twist on the legend of King Arthur, the player controls Flicker, who lives in Camelhot castle and is in love with Princess Flame, but is not eligible to ask for her hand in marriage because he is not a knight. However, the King has announced a dragon tournament, where the winner will not only win the princess but also become the new king. As a young Flicker, the player must collect various objects and interact with an eccentric cast of dragon and human characters in order to solve puzzles. The player's overall quest is to become a dragon knight to compete in the grand tournament and win the heart of Princess Flame. However, the player discovers an evil human plot to take over the kingdom by kidnapping the princess. As is the case with many other graphic adventure games, the player can never die in the game or reach a point in the game where a puzzle cannot be solved.
