Item Description

Few shooters on any console sound quite like this one. The North American and European release of BioMetal swapped out its original score for a soundtrack built from four remixed tracks by the Eurodance group 2 Unlimited, drawn from their 1991 album Get Ready!, and blasting through alien hordes to pounding early-90s techno is an experience nobody forgets. The nods run deeper than the music: the Halbard's crew, pilot Kid Ray and biologist Anita, are named after the group's two lead singers.

Underneath the beats is a fast, aggressive horizontal shooter from Athena, released in Japan in March 1993 and brought West by Activision later that year. It is set in Galaxy Century 232, when a fleet sent to the planet UP457 for resources is wiped out by the BioMetals, half-animal, half-machine aliens multiplying so fast they will overrun the Milky Way in 32 hours. Enemies come at you hard from the very first stage.

Six weapon types are on offer, released from destroyed pods and cycling through their options in the manner of Raiden, with laser and missile upgrade paths, and some choices cancel each other out. The signature mechanic is the GAM, the Gel Analog Mutant, which charges up and wraps the ship in four spinning orbs that soak up enemy fire, or can be hurled into the swarm. Keeping it active drains its charge, so using it well is a constant juggling act. Fans of R-Type will find a lot to like, right down to a final boss with a very familiar silhouette.

Japanese players heard an entirely different soundtrack by Yoshio Nagashima, and that split identity makes the Activision release a distinct curiosity. A cult favorite with shooter collectors, it is the 16-bit shooter where R-Type-style space combat meets the dance floor.

About the game

BioMetal is a side-scrolling shooter game. Their are two pairs, one for lasers and the other for missiles, of three upgrades for your weapons. The war that divided the galaxy and used all it's resources has ended. A fleet was sent on a mission to find more natural resources. They never returned. Their last transmission reveals that the enemy' created one last experiment. This experiment is a combination of the aggressive nature of animals combined with the efficiency of machines. These creatures were named BioMetal. The MF-92GX Halbard mothership has been assigned to destroy the threat before they can not be stopped. You are piloting the MF-92GX Halbard fighter that is equipped with the experimental Gel Analog Mutant weapon. The Gel is charged up on the ship and can be used to surround the ship as a protective shield or be thrown at the enemy forces.
