Item Description

Before Golden Sun, and before Mario Golf and Mario Tennis, the studio that became Camelot Software Planning made a classic-style role-playing game for Sony's brand-new PlayStation. Beyond the Beyond launched in Japan in 1995, while the team was still known as Sonic! Software Planning and fresh from its Shining work for Sega, and when it reached North America the following year it became the first RPG released on the PlayStation there. The Japanese edition is where that story began.

It wears its love of traditional JRPGs openly. Young swordsman Finn sets out across a sweeping overworld, gathering a party of warriors, mages, pirates and mystics who promote into stronger classes as they grow: clerks become high clerks, monks become master monks and conjurers become summoners. Exploration uses a top-down isometric view, while battles switch to a 360-degree perspective that showed off the new hardware, with summoned monsters and elemental storms reserved for the big fights.

The battle system has a clever wrinkle in the Active Playing System, which rewards a well-timed button press with a stronger action, an early cousin of the timing mechanics many later RPGs leaned on. Composer Motoi Sakuraba, who would go on to score Golden Sun, the Star Ocean series and Dark Souls, gives the adventure a warm, sweeping mid-90s soundtrack.

Western critics found it old-fashioned even in 1996, but that slow, deliberate pacing and patient, strategic combat are exactly what draw classic JRPG fans back to it. The Japanese release adds genuine import appeal and a look at Camelot's roots in their original form, and it is the missing link between the studio's Sega-era Shining games and the Golden Sun adventures that made its name on Nintendo handhelds.
