Item Description
Bayonetta 2 opens with its heroine on a Christmas shopping trip, then sends her battling a horde of angels while riding atop a fighter jet through a city skyline, and things only escalate from there. PlatinumGames' 2014 sequel is a celebration of excess in the best sense: a stylish, supremely confident action game that turns every fight into a show and still has the depth to keep serious players coming back.
When a summoning goes wrong and Jeanne's soul is dragged into Inferno, Bayonetta sets out for the holy mountain of Fimbulventr, the gateway to the underworld, to bring her back. Along the way she meets Loki, a mysterious boy with no memory of his past, and clashes with the Masked Lumen, a rival who seems to know far too much about her. The story swings between ridiculous and surprisingly heartfelt, with Rodin, Enzo and Luka all back for the ride.
The combat is where Bayonetta 2 shines. Dodging at the last instant triggers Witch Time, slowing the world so you can punish an enemy, and Wicked Weave attacks summon enormous limbs formed from her hair for crushing blows. The new Umbran Climax lets you spend a full magic gauge to turn every attack into a Wicked Weave for a short, glorious stretch. Weapons such as the Rakshasa blades and the Chernobog scythe join the series' system of separate hand and foot loadouts, and chapter grades topped by Pure Platinum rankings give every replay a clear goal. Nintendo-themed costumes let Bayonetta dress as Princess Peach, Link and Samus, and a two-player Tag Climax mode was built around online co-op.
The game's existence is a story in itself. Nintendo stepped in to publish it for the Wii U, and with series creator Hideki Kamiya supervising and Yusuke Hashimoto directing, PlatinumGames repaid that faith with a game Famitsu scored a perfect 40. It was a Wii U exclusive for years before reaching the Switch, which makes the original release a centerpiece of the console's library and the place where Bayonetta's life on Nintendo hardware began.
