Some fighting games chase balance and frame data. Battle Monsters chases the feel of a late-night creature feature. Naxat Soft's 1995 Saturn brawler throws twelve fiends from the underworld into head-to-head combat, with digitized fighters, sprays of gore and slime, and a cheerfully lurid attitude its own marketing summed up in one line: “There's a rumble in hell… and you're invited.”

What separates it from the crowd of mid-90s one-on-one fighters is the arena. The stages are tall, multi-level environments rather than flat strips, and fighters move freely between tiers in the middle of a round, so a match that starts on the ground floor can end several platforms up. Hazards are built into the scenery and hurt whoever blunders into them, which makes positioning a real part of the strategy: knocking an opponent into something nasty counts as much as landing a clean combo. Multi-hit attacks, mid-air exchanges and over-the-top special moves fill in the rest.

Critics were not kind. Battle Monsters is regularly named among the Saturn's worst-reviewed fighters, and its chaotic, anything-goes flow is a big part of why. Yet that reputation is exactly what has given it a second life as a cult curiosity, the kind of game collectors bring out to show friends. People are still digging into it decades later, too: in 2025 enthusiasts uncovered a hidden debug menu buried in its code.

It occupies an odd and memorable corner of the Saturn's fighting library, a long way from Virtua Fighter's polish and much closer to the spirit of a B-movie double feature. For a collector building out the console's stranger side, or anyone who loves a game that is more fun to talk about than to master, it earns its shelf space.
