Item Description

Forget the brooding Dark Knight of later games. Batman Forever: The Arcade Game is pure mid-90s neon excess, a hyperactive side-scrolling brawler where Batman and Robin tear through Two-Face and the Riddler's henchmen in a storm of flashing effects and outrageous combo counts. Acclaim built it first as a coin-op and then brought it home to the PlayStation, and it is a completely different game from the 16-bit Batman Forever that preceded it.

The arcade roots show everywhere. Two players can team up as Batman and Robin, launching thugs into the air, juggling them and stringing together combos that climb into wonderfully silly hit totals. Power-ups and special attacks pile on more screen-shaking spectacle, and the pace rarely lets up. It is a game built around the rhythm of a quarter-muncher: keep moving, keep hitting and keep that combo counter spinning.

Critics were not especially kind to it, mostly because it leans hard on button mashing, but that is exactly why it works as a couch co-op game today. There is almost no learning curve, a second player can jump in and contribute immediately, and the glowing, candy-colored Gotham is a perfect time capsule of the era when the Schumacher films ruled the box office.

It also fills a gap most Batman collections miss. Between the 16-bit adaptations and the modern Arkham era, licensed Batman games took some strange turns, and this flashy arcade conversion is one of the most entertaining of them. Grab a friend, pick a hero and see how high the counter goes.
