Gotham has never looked as dark, as rain-soaked or as completely under siege as it does in Batman: Arkham Knight. Rocksteady Studios' 2015 finale to its Arkham saga opens on a single Halloween night: the city has been evacuated, Scarecrow has threatened to blanket it in fear toxin, and an army of militia led by the mysterious Arkham Knight has taken the streets. It is the biggest, boldest and most personal of Rocksteady's Batman games, and it ends the trilogy with real weight.
For the first time the Batmobile is fully drivable, and Gotham is built around it. Tear through streets and smash barricades in pursuit mode, then switch on the fly to battle mode, which turns the car into an armored tank for duels against unmanned drone tanks. It also becomes a puzzle tool, hauling down walls and moving machinery with its winch. The Freeflow combat that defined the series is sharper than ever, with dual-play takedowns that pair Batman with allies such as Robin, Nightwing and Catwoman, and fear takedowns that let him clear a room of thugs in a few stylish seconds.
The story digs deep into Batman's psyche, and it is one of the most striking parts of the trilogy. Kevin Conroy is back as Batman and Mark Hamill returns as the Joker, haunting the hero's mind in a way that is impossible to forget, while John Noble's Scarecrow is a cold, menacing presence. Side missions bring in a rogues' gallery including the Riddler, Two-Face, Penguin and Firefly, and the Riddler's trophies and race tracks give the islands of Gotham plenty more to discover after the main story wraps.
Arkham Knight brought the series to the PlayStation 4 generation with a level of detail that set a new bar for superhero games at the time, and its blend of brawling, gadgets, stealth and driving has rarely been matched since. If you followed Batman from the halls of Arkham Asylum through Arkham City, this is the place where that story reaches its end, and it is a grand finale worth seeing through.
Batman: Arkham Knight is an action-adventure game developed by Rocksteady Studios, released in 2015. It is the final installment in the Arkham series. Players control Batman as he faces Scarecrow, who unites Gotham's criminals to destroy the Dark Knight. The mysterious Arkham Knight, a new adversary, aids Scarecrow in his plan. The game features open-world exploration, stealth, combat, and puzzle-solving. A key addition is the Batmobile, used for traversal and combat. The story explores Batman’s psychological struggles and the collapse of his alliances as Gotham spirals into chaos.
