Item Description

A laid-back bear in shorts, a sharp-tongued red breegull riding in his backpack, and a witch who insults you in rhyming couplets: Banjo-Kazooie announces its personality within seconds. Rare's 1998 Nintendo 64 platformer arrived in the wake of Super Mario 64 and proved the 3D collectathon had plenty of room for a second great idea. Gruntilda has kidnapped Banjo's little sister Tooty to steal her looks, and the climb to stop her takes the pair from Spiral Mountain up through the witch's lair, a hub of puzzle-locked doors that opens onto one world after another.

Each world is a self-contained playground stuffed with Jiggies, Musical Notes and Mumbo Tokens: the tropical shores of Treasure Trove Cove, the snowbound slopes of Freezeezy Peak, the spooky halls of Mad Monster Mansion, and Click Clock Wood, where a single giant tree is revisited across all four seasons. Kazooie supplies most of the toolkit, from the Beak Barge and egg-firing to Talon Trot climbs and flight from Flight Pads, and Bottles the mole teaches each new move as you go. Bring enough tokens to the shaman Mumbo Jumbo and he turns Banjo into a termite, a crocodile, a walrus, a pumpkin or a bee to reach places bear and bird can't.

Grant Kirkhope's score is practically a character of its own, with each world's theme shifting its instrumentation seamlessly as you dive underwater or step inside a building. The writing has a cheeky British wit, the cast gabbles in that unmistakable garbled speech, and the road to the final battle runs through Grunty's Furnace Fun, a full-on board-game quiz show that tests what you remember about the adventure and Gruntilda herself. It's a bold, funny swerve few platformers would dare.

Banjo-Kazooie captures Rare at the height of its N64 run, the same stretch that produced GoldenEye 007 and Diddy Kong Racing, and its lush colors and varied worlds still look charming on original hardware. It led to Banjo-Tooie two years later, and its ending teased the mysterious Stop 'n' Swop feature that fans spent years trying to decode. Playing it now, you still find a world built with obvious affection, where every corner hides a joke, a secret or a tune worth humming.
