A sleepy village above a mythical underworld, a prophecy about a pure-hearted child, and legendary owls standing guard: Baldo: The Guardian Owls looks like a lost Studio Ghibli film that somebody turned into an old-school Zelda adventure. Developed and published by the Italian studio Naps Team in 2021, it is set in the land of Rodia, where the owls once sealed away a powerful creature without a heart, and a prophecy warns it will break free when a pure child is born. Baldo, a seemingly ordinary boy, is caught up in that prophecy coming true.

The hand-painted, cel-shaded art is the first thing anyone notices. Seen from a fixed isometric camera, its villages, mansions and sweeping landscapes have a storybook depth, and the people Baldo meets are eccentric and full of personality. The game is built around exploration and dungeons in the classic mold: multi-level, interconnected labyrinths full of switches, keys and backtracking, including a wrecked galleon full of cannons, hidden passages and a boss lurking in its flooded depths.

This is a demanding, old-fashioned adventure. Objectives are not marked on a map, the world expects you to read signs, talk to everyone and work things out for yourself, and the combat and puzzles can be unforgiving. Players who love that kind of challenge, and who miss the days when an adventure did not hold your hand, will find a lot to chew on here, and the Ghibli-inspired presentation is a pleasure to wander through.

Baldo is a small, unusual indie that never saw the attention of bigger releases, which makes it an interesting find for a PlayStation 4 shelf, especially for collectors drawn to hand-drawn art and Zelda-style adventures.
